Already up-to-date with ASAM ODS as a concept for measurement data management? Understood all the benefits, but can’t make the abstract theory work with your specific project challenges? It’s time for a Proof of Concept for ASAM ODS in order to evaluate how it benefits your integrated enterprise.

1: The initial Workshop
A proof of concept for ASAM ODS targets at projects or departments which have to process measurement data and do not have an ODS system running. The scope of a proof of concept as displayed below is a slim prototype to evaluate the possibilities of utilizing ODS. The workshop lasts for one day and takes place at the customer’s site.
We involve the customer in the approach beginning with the initial workshop. Thus, the delivered prototype allows the customer to evaluate the system on his own and to familiarize himself with ODS. A PoC is best accompanied with some training to gain some expertise while setting up the project.
The target of the initial workshop is to discuss the requirements as well as the processes of the customer. An important aspect to the discussion is the content of the data format produced, how it is processed and how it is supplemented by information required for data management.
As a result of the workshop we create an ATFx file to contain the application model.
2: Development of Importer
With the original data format as well as the target model known, we’re able to develop an import software. Therefor, we usually utilize our ModelMapper (MoMa). Depending on the requirements, complexity of the data and model (e.g. processing rules) this might take a few days. This is a straight forward task to us, as our MoMa utilizes probably all rule sets required for the job. Hence, it’s a matter of adaption and configuration efforts.
The import software utilized for a Proof of Concept may not cover all aspects of the process in order to reduce efforts.
3: The final Workshop
Once we have developed the Importer Software, we are able to set up the whole system.
Usually, the Proof of Concept for ASAM ODS is implemented in a virtual machine and contains the following software:
- Importer Software
- Avalon ODS Server
- Application Model
- Oracle (free version)
- Manatee Web Application
- HQL
Within the final workshop, we discuss the results of the Proof of Concept with the customer and run through different use cases. We are also able to further configure the applications to customer demands. Afterwards, customers may evaluate the system on their own.

Obtaining a productive system
After successfully evaluating the Proof of Concept for ASAM ODS as a solution to your enterprise, the road to implement a productive environment is not that complicated. A limited system with the original data is already in place, allowing the engineers to access the required information. Usual tasks to obtain a productive environment are
- Utilizing hardware of central IT
- Avalon ODS Server
- Oracle
- Updating and Improving System Configuration
- Implementing LDAP Access (if necessary)
- Further Development of Importer (if necessary, e.g. improving error cases)
Therefore, the productive system is in place with limited additional efforts and within a reasonable time frame. For further development of the overall system, please see section product development.
